Astore Valley, Rama Lake & Minimarg: A Travel Guide
Astore is the quieter, wilder side of Nanga Parbat. Off the Karakoram Highway near Jaglot, it climbs into pine-forested meadows, alpine lakes and — beyond — the remote, emerald valley of Minimarg near the Kashmir frontier. If you want big mountains without the crowds, this is it.
Where is Astore?
Astore Valley sits in Gilgit-Baltistan, reached by turning off the KKH near Jaglot and driving up into the district. It faces the eastern side of Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), the ninth-highest mountain on earth.
Rama Meadows & Rama Lake
Above the town of Astore lie the Rama Meadows — pine forest opening onto grassland — and, a short walk or jeep ride higher, Rama Lake (~3,300 m), a still alpine lake with Nanga Parbat rising behind it. It's the highlight of most Astore trips and a magical place to camp.
Minimarg & Domail
Deeper still, past Rattu, lies Minimarg — a lush, isolated green valley near the Line of Control, with the Domail river confluence and the famous Rainbow Lake. It's a sensitive border area, so permits are required and it's best visited with a local operator who arranges them.
Best time to visit
The season is roughly June to September, when the meadows are green and the higher roads to Rama and Minimarg are open. Nights are cold year-round at altitude — bring warm layers.
