Hunza vs Skardu: Which Should You Visit?
Hunza and Skardu are the two headline destinations of Gilgit-Baltistan — and first-timers often can't decide between them. The honest answer: they're different trips. Here's how to choose (or combine both).

Choose Hunza for culture, forts, apricot-orchard valleys and the road to the China border. Choose Skardu for raw high-mountain scenery — lakes, a cold desert and the gateway to K2 and the Deosai plateau. Got a week or more? Do both.

Scenery & landscape
Hunza is a cultivated, cultural valley — terraced orchards, forts and famous peaks framing the villages. Skardu is bigger and rawer: wide river plains, turquoise lakes, sand dunes beneath snow peaks, and the Deosai plateau above it.
Getting there
Both are reached overland via the Karakoram Highway from Islamabad (usually with a night in Chilas). Skardu also has a spectacular but weather-dependent flight from Islamabad. Hunza is a little more accessible; Skardu feels more remote.
Best time to visit
Both are best May to October. Hunza adds spring blossom (late March–April) and golden autumn (October); Skardu's Deosai plateau only opens roughly late June to September.
